Bone fishing from a luxurious home base..
The Scene
The name "Cheeca" is a combination of the first letters of Che-Che and Carl Twitchell, heirs to the A&P grocery-store fortune and two of the resort's original owners. Along with three restaurants, a spa and the usual upscale amenities, the property offers fishing charters from its 525-foot pier. For those who prefer their water without whitecaps, there is a saltwater lagoon. There are also two heated swimming pools, a wading pool and four Jacuzzis.
The Details
The property was completely renovated in 2004. All of the rooms and bungalows (most with private balconies and magnificent views) have been updated with such features as marble baths and plasma TVs. A new waterfall has been added behind the spa, which has itself been upgraded with private cabanas, decks, three new treatment rooms and a 24-hour fitness center. The George Bush Presidential Retreat features mementos donated by Bush, Sr., including autographed photos of himself with George W. There's also marble floors, a whirlpool tub and a screened balcony along the length of the suite. The beachfront is lined with palm trees and is more than 1,000 feet long. Six tennis courts and a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course are also on-site.
