Editorial Review for The Banyan Resort – by Bill Citara

The Scene
If you've never seen a banyan tree, then the two centuries-old specimens that shelter this eponymous resort alone are worth a visit. The fig species can grow to enormous size and produces dozens of aerial roots like strange, otherworldly tentacles. And, like most things Key West, the resort is just a short walk away from the town's main attractions: Duval Street and Mallory Square.

The Details
Eight Victorian-style houses make up the Banyan Resort, five of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its 38 rooms range from studios to two-bed/two-bath suites. Many of the suites have private patios or overlook the resort's lush gardens, home to more than 200 varieties of tropical flora. Just to keep you busy relaxing, there's also a Jacuzzi, heated spring-fed swimming pools and a tiki bar.

Insider Tips

When to Go

If you're just stopping by to admire the grounds and you're on the adventurous side, visit the resort at night. Legend has it that Mr. Cosgrove, the original owner of the hotel haunts the gardens.
