Key West >Dogs On Duval
Beware – Do not mention the words “puppy mill” in this store. The middle aged red haired sales clerk will chase you out. She could hardly take the money for our purchase because she was too busy berating me, the U.S. Government, the Amish and Oprah’s segment on puppy mills. This sales clerk (or owner) was out of control. As I said, she chased us out of the store saying that I insulted her. In a loud and aggravated voice she implied that mentioning a puppy mill was the same as calling a black man the “N” word only she used the actual word in front of people on Duval Street. I was not accusing her I was asking a question, which is my right as a consumer. This sales clerk was very unprofessional and embarrassed my friends and myself, who by the way, have spent a lot of money in Key West during a 10 day vacation.
In mentioning this episode to another acquaintance visiting Key West from MA, we all shared the concern that whenever passing by the store, several times a day, the puppies were fast asleep, which doesn’t seem like normal playful puppy behavior. My biggest concern of course is the welfare of the puppies. Secondly, the behavior of this sales clerk is a bad reflection on Key West and its merchant community.
In closing, up until the encountered at Dogs on Duval, our experiences in Key West over the past twenty years have been very positive.
Thank you! We love our new "Milo".
We weren't planning on buying a dog, but we just walked in and fell in love. That was it, we were head over heels enamored with this tiny little mini dachshund and we knew instantly he wanted to be with us too! The owner offered to let us hold him and that's it he's been with us everywhere ever since!
The store was great, we bought everything we needed to bring him home, travel case, food, a water bottle for on-th-go situations, and lots of other things that were like having another baby!
We are just so appreciative of all the care tips, and useful hints the owner gave us. She even gave us her home phone number so we could call if we had any questions.
I just wanted to share and say thank you!
You guys are the best!!!
PS: We want to send some pictures for your board!
great pet store!. I only live a few blocks from dogs on duval, i walk by the store almost everyday on my way to work and the love stopping and seeing the puppies. the two women that run the store are always friendly and I love the fact that they care for the puppies so much, and take them home with them every night! I know alot of locals that have gotten dogs from dogs on duval, and many that have more than one. this is a great family run shop and its good see something other than a bar or tshirt shop on duval!!!
Love this business!. From its start, Dogs on Duval has been my go-to for everything from homemade pet treats, advice and care, the cutest and latest fashions and necessities, and finally the warm fuzzy feeling that I get from watching a lot of happy puppies play around in the window. If I ever have a question about anything puppy-related I know I can always stop by the store and be helped by the friendly and well-educated staff. On numerous occasions they have provided me with caring and considerate answers to many inquiries that I have come to them with since becoming a mother to my two furry sons. ☺ They have proven to be endlessly knowledgeable and helpful. I have always found it so sweet how each puppy from their store is cared for in the family home every day and night and every last one is treated and tailored to their individual needs. If you ever need a quick pick me up you can also check out the pups at their home on YouTube. This family never stops as they are always working on the puppy’s time both in the store and at home! I cannot recommend this business more for its kind and experienced employees, great merchandise, and most importantly their beautiful, healthy, one-of-a-kind puppies! This family knows their puppies and I couldn’t be happier with mine!!
Love love love. I am sooooo happy with my babies my little guy Skye just turned 1 last week though not so little any more!! haha. He is the alpha male in the house (and might I add the only male so I guess he needs to protect us all)!. He is a white schnauzer with a gorgeous coat! My groomer always talks about it but Teresa at Dogs on Duval told me to give him fish oil and there has been such a difference in his coat. I also got Peggy Sue my lil southern belle from Dogs on Duval almost 3 years ago they light up my life and Im so glad I have them :)
It is funny, I was googling this store to see if anyone had anything good to say and the first review I saw was almost the EXACT experience I had.
I went in the store with my mother and aunt because they wanted to look at shirts for their dogs. I didn't realize there were puppies inside. So my mother is taking pictures of them and I said to her how I would never buy, you should adopt, etc. Apparently the psychotic woman working there wanted to join in and she told me - IF YOU FEEL THAT WAY THEN YOU SHOULDN'T BE IN HERE. So I said - Okay. And I went to walk out. She got in my face and said BYE. So I said - Well it's disgusting. And she said - YOU'RE disgusting. Um, good one. So I told her to get a real job.
When I got back to NY, I contacted the owner (or someone who was pretending to be) about the incident. Basically, he defended her. He told me how activists come in the store all the time, throwing wine and hitting their employees. They lost a lot of money in court cases, etc. Well that's a great story, but I am not an activist. I was having a private conversation with my mother. He also said how they don't get their dogs from puppy mills, but from private breeders. How about instead of cursing at people, you explain that to them? If he was apologetic about the situation, I would have forgotten about it, but the fact he defended her behavior, I am glad they are losing their money. Karma is a bitch...and so is the girl who works in that store.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS STORE. After reading other reviews about this pet store, I felt compelled to write about my experience. My family and I were recently on vacation in Key West and stopped by this pet store looking for a dog leash. After seeing the puppies in the window, I asked the own/manager (a lady with reddish hair) about the dogs and were they come from. Upon interaction with this woman, she became very aggitated and defensive. When I asked about puupy mills, she literally chased me out of the store and verbially assaulted me by telling me to "F" off and go back where I came from. I was simple asking questions, as I have a chihuahua and she turned into a crazy person. I have witnesses that saw her yelling at me in the street. It just seemed so odd. After reading all the reviews, it now makes sense because she is clearly running a shade pet operation and was upset that I was inquiring where the dogs were from. It's a shame that the city of Key West allows shade business practices and people like this woman to represent their city. Tourism brings a great deal of money to the city of Key West which helps the city flourish. Next time I'll go somewhere else for vacation!
